Computational Transportation Principles
This course will emphasize highlevel concepts over hands-on-skills, focusing on computational aspects of transportation. It will consist of two parts. The first will cover modeling and simulation of network problems, complexity of network optimization, network equilibrium problems, and various approximation approaches for network problems. The second part of the course will cover the basics of database design and theory and then focus on spatial and temporal information systems issues such as query languages and indexing, as well as Geographic Information Systems and Location Based Services. Introduction to Urban Transportation
This UIC course (Urban Planning and Policy 560, Urban Transportation I) will provide the necessary foundation in transportation and transportation planning for the fellows in engineering or business Ph.D. programs. Major issues studied include congestion, environmental impacts, and the standard four-step urban travel forecasting process consisting of trip generation, trip distribution, modal split, and traffic assignment.
Advanced Modeling and Data Analysis in Transportation
This interdisciplinary course will cover fundamental formal concepts of transportation modeling and planning, and trip routing/scheduling. This course will present the concepts and models needed to address transportation issues and effectively use information technology to improve the quality and quantity of transportation services. The course will also link the models to the data needed to support these analyses and the evaluation of proposed improvements and changes. Students will use emerging planning and modeling tools to explore how transportation systems behave in response to changes in information, vehicle technology, services, supply and demand, etc.
The course will consist of three main modules. The first module will focus on advanced traffic engineering modeling and management techniques with an emphasis on highway capacity analysis, queuing systems, and traffic control. The second module will focus on advanced quantitative analysis and modeling of transportation system for planning purposes. The third module will improve the general understanding of our students on emerging quantitative and modeling techniques including simulation, and in particular microsimulation models and techniques (simulations in which each vehicle is modeled).
Information Technology and Economics of Urban Transportation
This course, to be taught by the Information Decision Sciences Department, will deal with economic pricing, optimization and game theoretic approaches to urban transportation. Topics covered include performance evaluation, pricing models, prediction models, optimization methods, network models and decision analysis. The material will be taught within the context of relevant theories of consumer and producer behavior building on the basic principles of uncertainty, general equilibrium and welfare economics.
Privacy, Ethics and Security
All IGERT students will normally take this interdisciplinary course during the summer after their first year. The primary focus is on ethical issues in computational transportation, especially privacy issues. The secondary focus of the course will be an introduction to computer and communications security, with special attention to the methods for providing privacy. Ethical, legal, and public policy material will be roughly 65 - 80% of the course content, and the rest will be technical material on security.
