Bret Johnson is the Associate Director of the Transportation Center, a position he assumed in July, 2009. He has been the Director the Center for the Commercialization of Innovative Transportation Technology, a USDOT funded University Transportation Center, since 2007. He previously served as Director for the Homeland Security Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center and as Assistant Director for the Illinois Technology Enterprise Center (ITEC) at Northwestern, both technology-based economic development programs funded by the State of Illinois.

Prior to joining Northwestern, Bret held engineering and project management positions at 3COM, Northrop-Grumman, and GE Astrospace. He received an M.A. in Science, Technology and Public Policy from The George Washington University, an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

At the Transportation Center, Bret’s primary responsibilities are strategic relations with industry and research partners, and strategic projects and opportunities. As the director of two Centers at Northwestern University and through previous industry roles, he has managed the operation of a research center and an economic development program for small business. Over the last nine years at Northwestern, he has been involved with hundreds of technology and market assessment projects, including primary and secondary research and the supervision of others to do the same.

Bret lives in Evanston, IL with his wife, Kendra Morrill, and two boys, Alex (8) and Trevor (5).
