CTS-IGERT welcomes Dr. Dr. Piyushimita (Vonu) Thakuriah, Department of Urban Planning and Policy, UIC, who will present a seminar entitled "Information Technology in the Context of Transportation and Society" on Friday, Nov 19th at 2:30 in Room 1000 SEO.

Abstract:
The presentation will provide an overview of current themes in transportation and information technology. Building on research on transportation, society and the economy, implications will be drawn regarding how information technology may play an increasingly prominent role in these complex settings. For example, the role of technology to boost the mobility needs of seniors, persons with disabilities, young adults and persons looking to improve their labor market outcomes will be discussed. Additionally, recent research has shown that the impact of information technology on difficult problems such as congestion has been quite limited to date. Building on emerging research streams, collaborative research strategies to address these limitations will also be discussed.

Biography:
Vonu Thakuriah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Policy, where she teaches transportation planning. Her research interests are in the relationship of transportation systems to the economy, society and labor markets, and on the forecasting, technology policy and behavioral aspects of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Location-Based Services. Dr. Thakuriah is the long-term lead investigator in national evaluations of some of US Department of Transportations most prominent programs linking transportation to labor markets, and the well-being of persons with disabilities and of seniors. This research on transportation policy has been co-funded by the US Department of Labor and the Community Transportation Association of America. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Urban and Regional Information Systems (URISA Journal), a member of the ITS World Congress Program Committee and Co-PI of UICs CTS IGERT program.
