Dr. Sybil Derrible, Assistant Professor, CME, will present a seminar at Wednesday, October 10th, 4:00p.m. in Room 1127 SEO. Title: Rethinking Transit Planning: Lessons from Complex Networks Abstract: In a rapidly urbanizing world, coupled with environmental concerns, the future of public transportation systems is bright. Nonetheless, planning these transit systems can be challenging. Conventional planning technics attempt to design systems that are inherently proper to the cities' needs, and yet we find in this presentation that many systems share common geometric features. By concentrating on metro networks, I will bring you around the world and compare 33 cities. Transit systems are complex networks, and by using tools and technics from the emerging field of network science, we can learn to better design our future. |
