Richard (Rick) Weiland, "Intelligent Transportation Systems Standards- Why Do They Matter?"

Richard Weiland, Senior Vice President and Executive Advisor, Ygomi LLC, will present a seminar.

Time: 10:30 am
Location: 341 CUPPA Hall (412 S. Peoria)

Part of UIC's Urban Transportation Center
2007-08 Seminar Series

Abstract: Anybody who thinks that the development of standards - ITS standards in particular - is the quiet and systematic pursuit of technological ideals clearly has not been involved in the process for as much as ten minutes. Standards development is in fact the most fundamental kind of bare-knuckle technological combat, potentially with enormous stakes. We will talk about how and where standards get developed, both in general and with a focus on ITS. We will debunk a few other standards development myths and explore why industry participants are prepared to spend scarce people and financial resources to develop ITS standards both domestically and internationally.

Bio: Richard Weiland is Senior Vice President and Executive Advisor at Ygomi LLC an entrepreneurial company with longstanding interests in ITS. (Among other things, Ygomi principals founded Navteq, the world leader in digital street map databases for advanced transportation applications). Mr. Weiland was the first chair of ITS America's Committee on Standards and Protocols, Chair of the ITS Standards Division of the Society of Automotive Engineers, and is currently Chair of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC204, the international committee on ITS Standards. Mr. Weiland holds degrees in mathematics, computer science, and business administration from the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago.
