Research Efforts

Our IGERT program will develop the scientific basis for the necessary technology components. We will develop a hierarchy of protocols, communications systems, data models, and interfaces that scale gracefully over individual travelers and the infrastructure; and algorithms for collecting the appropriate data, abstracting it, sharing it, and retrieving it as needed. The specific research themes that we will focus on are as follows:

Information management and communication: high mobility wireless communication, collection, management, aggregation, mining, and sharing of real-time and uncertain information distributed among moving travelers/vehicles and the infrastructure.

Software tools and services: computer vision, sensor fusion, scheduling and travel-time prediction, economic models and real-time negotiation among travelers, and long-term infrastructure planning.

Human factors: human-computer interfaces, privacy issues, and social and institutional issues.

Research Theme 1: Information Management and Communication

  • Data Modeling, Acquisition, Maintenance, and Prediction
  • Data Mining and Analysis
  • Wireless Networking
  • Mobile peer-to-peer data management
  • Information Security for Transportation Systems

Research Theme 2: Software Tools and Support Services

  • Sensor Fusion and Computer Vision
  • Regional Planning
  • Cost Modeling and Pricing
  • Routing and Travel-time prediction

Research Theme 3: Human and Social Factors

  • Human-computer Interaction
  • Privacy of Personal Information, Safety
  • Socio-economic and Institutional Issues
